We’re thrilled to share that The 1661 Farm & Gardens was recently featured on NBC Boston’s Hub Today, showcasing the heart of what makes our farm such a special part of Block Island.
Owner Seth Draper put it best when describing our mission:
“I'd like to call it ‘the good life retirement home for animals,’ so it's more of a rescue in the sense of giving them a place to live their life.”
From Llamas to Bactrian camels, and even our one-of-a-kind Zedonk, the farm is home to dozens of remarkable animals, each with a story and a safe haven here. Many have been rescued or rehomed, and now spend their days grazing, resting, and greeting visitors. It’s a sanctuary where animals can truly live out their lives in peace—and where guests of all ages can experience the joy of connecting with them.
But the animals are only part of the story. The farm also serves as a vibrant living classroom and garden space. As Draper shared:
“We have many organic vegetable gardens, food forest and permaculture gardens for people to enjoy. As much as it's a large attraction for visitors, it’s also a place for the community and local families to come and spend time here.”
Our gardens flourish with fresh organic vegetables, permaculture plantings, and edible landscapes that both nourish our hotel buffets and provide inspiration for sustainable living.
Whether you’re here for a family visit, a peaceful walk among the animals, or to learn more about sustainable gardening practices, The 1661 Farm & Gardens offers a space where nature, community, and care come together.
